A Special 16 Day Pilgrimage to
The Holy Land, Jordan & Medjugorje
with Katherine Escobar

July 19 - August 3, 2020

Proposed Itinerary

Sun, Jul 19 - Depart for Jordan
Depart Orlando for your overnight flights to Jordan. Breakfast and dinner are served aboard the transatlantic segment.

Mon, Jul 20 - Arrive Amman
Upon arrival in Amman, make your way to the baggage claim area and collect your luggage. Proceed to the Arrival's Hall, where you will be greeted by your Catholic Journeys tour guide and bus driver, and transferred to your hotel for dinner and overnight.

Tue, Jul 21 - Baptism Site, Mt Nebo, Madaba
This morning you will head south to visit the Baptismal site of John the Baptist, near the Jordan River which was reconsecrated in 2000 during the visit of Saint John Paul II. Drive out of the Jordan Valley and from the summit of Mt. Nebo, view the "Promised Land" as Moses did. Nearby city of Madaba is home to a beautiful sixth century mosaic of Palestine, possibly the oldest existing map of the Holy Land. Continue traveling south along the Kings Highway to Wadi Musa (Petra) for dinner and overnight.

Wed, Jul 22- Petra - Jerash, Um Qais - Sea of Galilee
A visit to Petra is indeed an adventure. From the town of Wadi Musa you will walk through the rose colored canyon to Petra, a city dating back to 300 B.C., which was literally cut into the cliff sides. You can also take an optional a horse/donkey cart ride through the Syk, a mile long gorge that contains a number of magnificent structures that are carved into the mountains. You will tour the various temples, the Amphitheater, the Monastery, the Streets of Columns, and the Treasury. In the afternoon you will travel north to Jerash. Jesus came to the ‘land of the Gerasenes’ and like Pella, Amman and Gadara it was one of the cities of the Decapolis. Explore the beautiful Graeco-Roman city of Jerash (in the Bible Gerasa) with its temples, streets of columns, theatres and even from a later time churches. From here you will visit Um Qais (probably Gadara) from which the swine rushed down to the Sea of Galilee. From here there is a wonderful view over the Sea of Galilee. Drive on to cross the Jordan River via the Sheikh Hussein Bridge into Galilee. Dinner and overnight in Tiberias.

Thu, Jul 23 - Sea of Galilee (The Ministry of Christ: Boat ride, Capernaum, Mt. Beatitudes, Caesarea Philippi) Some of today's highlights are a boat ride across the Sea of Galilee to Capernaum to see the synagogue and St Peter's house, a visit to the Mount of the Beatitudes where the Sermon on the Mount was given, to Tabgha to see the splendid mosaic about the miracle of the loaves and fishes, and to the nearby Church of Peter's Primacy where Peter was told "Feed my lambs, feed my sheep." Visit Caesarea Philippi, location of the testimony of St. Peter and where Jesus answered him “You are the Rock and upon this rock I will build my church.” Dinner and overnight at your hotel in the Galilee.

Fri, Jul 24 - Mt Tabor, Cana, Nazareth
Begin with a drive to Mount Tabor, scene of the Transfiguration when Jesus appeared in glorified form and spoke with Moses and Elijah before his disciples Peter, John and James. Visit the Basilica of the Transfiguration before driving to Cana, the village of Jesus' first miracle of changing water into wine; here couples may renew their wedding vows. Continue to Nazareth, the town in which Jesus lived as a child. Celebrate Mass in the Church of the Annunciation and see the workshop of Joseph and the house of the Holy family. View the remains of the house of the Blessed Virgin where the Angel appeared and announced the Good News and visit the well where the Virgin Mary would have walked to draw water from the spring. Dinner and overnight in Galilee.

Sat, Jul 25 - Sepphoris, Mt Carmel, Caesarea, Jerusalem
We begin the day by visiting Sepphoris, a regional city at the time of Jesus. Then on to Mukhraka where Elijah confronted the false prophets of Baal and where the Carmelite Order was started. Continue down the coast to Caesarea, where the Romans held Paul prisoner and visit the Roman and Crusader ruins. This evening you will arrive in Jerusalem, a city with 4000 years of history. Dinner and overnight in Jerusalem.

Sun, Jul 26 - Jerusalem: Temple Model, Bethlehem (Nativity), Ein Karem (Visitation)
This morning we will visit a model of the Second Temple as it was in the time of Jesus. Following this visit, you will take a short drive to the village of Ein Karem, the birthplace of John the Baptist. There are two churches here, representing the two homes of Zechariah and Elizabeth, are the Church of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, and the Church of the Visitation. In the after-noon, you will travel to Bethlehem, the birthplace of Jesus. Visit Manger Square and the Church of the Nativity built over the grotto which marks the spot of Our Savior's birth. Here beneath the altar, there is a silver star and a Latin inscription that states: HIC DE VIRGINE MARIA JESUS CHRISTUS NATUS (Here Jesus Christ was born to the Virgin Mary). Following Mass we will visit Shepherd's Fields and see the caves where they lit fire to keep warm through the night. Return to Jerusalem for dinner and overnight.

Mon, Jul 27 - Bethany, Jericho, Dead Sea
Begin the day with a visit to Bethany where Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead before continuing on to the oasis town of Jericho to see the excavations of the oldest city in the world and to view Mt. Temptation where Jesus fasted and was tempted by Satan. Visit Qumran, where the Dead Sea scrolls were discovered and continue on to the Dead Sea where time and weather permitting, you will have the opportunity to take a for a swim (or rather a float!) in the mineral rich water, renowned for its healing properties. Return to Jerusalem for dinner and overnight.

Tue, Jul 28 - Jerusalem: Mt. Of Olives, Gethsemane,
Mt. Zion (Upper Room), Western Wall

Travel to the Mt. of Olives and take in the dramatic view of the Old City. Here we will visit the Pater Noster where the Lord’s Prayer is carved in the walls in many languages, and the Chapel of the Ascension from where Jesus ascended to Heaven. Walk down along the Palm Sunday route stopping at Dominus Flevit, where Jesus wept over Jerusalem. Then to Gethsemane, the Rock of Agony, where Jesus prayed His last prayer before His arrest. In the afternoon, we will visit the remains of Western Wall of the ancient Temple of Jerusalem. Nearby is the Dome of the Rock and Temple Mount. From there you will visit the House of Caiaphas and see the dungeon where Jesus was imprisoned after His arrest. Also called St. Peter in Gallicantu (which means “cockcrow” in Latin), this is the place where Peter denied knowing Jesus three times. You will also visit the Upper Room on Mt. Zion. The Upper Room is where Jesus and His disciples celebrated the Last Supper and where Jesus appeared to His disciples after His Death and Resurrection. Nearby you will visit the Benedictine Church of the Dormition which tradition tells us is the place where Mary, the Mother of Jesus, "fell asleep," before her Assumption into heaven. Dinner and overnight in Jerusalem.

Wed, Jul 29 - Jerusalem: Via Dolorosa (The Way of the Cross) - Holy Sepulchre (The Crucifixion and the Resur-rection)
This morning you will have a very early wake-up to begin the Via Dolorosa (The Way of the Cross) at the Antonia Fortress. This is the spot where Jesus was condemned to death by Pontius Pilate. Following His condemnation, He was taken (on the Road to Calvary) to His place of Crucifixion. Reflect upon the Stations of the Cross as you travel through the markets of the Old City to the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, the site of Calvary (Jesus' crucifixion place) and His tomb, to celebrate Mass. Following Mass, you will return to the hotel to enjoy breakfast. You will continue your day with a visit to the Church of St. Anne's, the home of Jesus' maternal grand-parents (Anne and Joachim); and the Pool of Bethesda, where Jesus healed the crippled man. This afternoon you will have free time to revisit your favorite places in the Old City. Enjoy a special Farewell Dinner overnight in Jerusalem.

Thu, Jul 30 - Tel Aviv - Medjugorje
Early morning departure from Tel Aviv for your flights to Medjugorje. Upon arrival, you'll be greeted by your local guide and driver who will then take you on the 2.5 hour drive to the village of Medjugorje. Once there, you'll meet your host family in who’s modern and comfortable house you will be staying for the next several nights.

Fri-Sun, Jul 31 - Aug 2 - Medjugorje
Here are some of the activities planned for Medjugorje:

- Daily Mass: Each morning, at 10:00am (noon on Sunday), the group will assemble at St. James Church for Mass and the blessing of religious   articles immediately following.

- Climb Apparition Hill: Recite the Rosary while climbing the hill to the place where the visionaries first allegedly encountered Our Lady.

- Climb Mt. Krizevac (Cross Mountain): In 1933, the villagers built a 30' high cross atop a mountain to commemorate Jesus' passion and death on the cross. Climb to the top, stopping 15 times along the way to Pray the Stations of the Cross.

- Apparitions: Join villagers and pilgrims in praying the Rosary in St. James Church at 6pm, and stay for the alleged apparition of Our Lady to the visionaries at 6:40pm. The Croatian Mass and Blessing of the Sick immediately follow.

- Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament: Our Lady has always called us to be close to Her Son. Join fellow pilgrims for Adoration on Tuesday and Saturday at the outside altar of St. James Church, and for Veneration of the Cross on Friday inside the church. Adoration is also available in the Chapel every afternoon.

- Meetings with the Visionaries: Pending their availability, the guide will arrange meetings with the visionaries.

 - Visit to the Community of Cenacolo: Founded by the Sisters of Charity, Cenacolo is a community for young men and women who have lost their way in life, and are on the road to recovery. We will hear their inspirational words about their journeys back to Jesus Christ.
